Wednesday Winsight-6: And/Yet... two words to foster a growth mindset
Everything before but is a lie, the saying goes. "I like you, but..." "You did well, but..."
What if, instead of but we used and: "I like you, and..." "You did well, and..."
Hear the difference? But excludes. And includes. But discounts and subordinates what was said prior. And acknowledges it.
Another word to use more often is yet at the end of a statement about what someone hasn't completed or achieved. "I can't do that yet" sounds much more positive and promising than simply saying, "I can't do that".
Make these small changes now. Exemplify and encourage a growth mindset. Use and & yet at work and at home.
